DesignSmart: KBD Blog

November 17, 2011
Who would have thought that living in Louisville for the last 10 years is a Silicon Valley veteran (even working PST hours too)?
Alas, she couldn't stay hidden...
Katie Bush is the founder and creative director of Katie Bush Design. She has been working in marketing communications and design for over 17 years and will be talking about her experiences working with Silicon Valley companies, as well as marketing/branding best practices.
Before founding KBD in 2000, Katie held positions as Design Director for Michael Patrick Partners in Palo Alto, CA and Marketing Design Director for the Hi-Tech Group of CMP Media in San Francisco. She has also been a designer for Gumas Communications in San Francisco and Greer, Margolis, Mitchell and Burns in Washington, DC. She holds a BFA degree from Georgetown University, and is one of the founding members of the Georgetown Tech Alliance. She's a member of AIGA and the founder of Friends of Bloom, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to building a new playground at Bloom Elementary in Louisville, KY.
Same drill as the last two events, an hour of networking and then the speaker presentation. Event is free and there will be a cash bar. Come prepared to have your picture taken, as we will be building a visual collage of Louisville's startup community!

KBD is pleased to announce the launch of the newly redesigned vyatta.com.
Vyatta On Demand Networking delivers on that requirement. Vyatta pioneered the decoupling of routing and security software from proprietary hardware, creating the industry’s first and only platform-independent network operating system, Vyatta Network OS. Vyatta Network OS enables system architects to secure and connect virtual, cloud or physical infrastructures while delivering the same elasticity, mobility, auto-provisioning and utility licensing benefits of the applications they support.
Corresponding with a new product and marketing campaign, Vyatta.com features a newly structured architecture and is built on the Drupal CMS, making content updates a breeze for the in house team to make on their own. KBD team members included: Katie Bush, John Kinsella, Lora Byrnside, Jeremy Williams and Gretchen Bush. View the site »

In an effort to make things just a little easier for our clients, we've set up a new online system for ordering business cards, available to any of our clients, whether we designed your business card originally or not! The special login and form only takes a few minutes to set up. Once it is, your firm's employees can go to the site directly, enter their own information, view a PDF proof, and confirm quantity and delivery information. Depending on the frequency of your orders, you will then either be billed monthly or per order. We think it's a great little service, we hope you agree. Contact us for more information.
Did you know that you can make your company's Facebook wall into its own website? In addition to clickable images, FBML (Facebook markup language) also allows you to embed flash or video (including beautiful slide shows and youtube channels), add a subscription to your email newsletter, monitor the page with Google analytics, show off your latest powerpoint slide deck or PDF file, and more. Increasing your Facebook presence with apps like these is not only a great way to solidify your online brand, but gives you the opportunity for powerful audience engagement. KBD is now offering Facebook implementations as part of our capabilities. Let us know how we can help you with yours!
IPWireless recently unveiled a newly redesigned and completely reconfigured website with the help of KBD.
IPWireless—a pioneer in developing and designing wireless broadband and broadcast solutions for mobile operators, consumer electronics companies, and government agencies—contracted KBD in August to help them refocus the content of their site to better match how they were selling their products. Over the last year, their business model evolved, and three separate audience segments were quickly emerging. IPWireless realized that a complete re-architecting of the site would be necessary to most clearly delineate their selling points to each segment of the wireless industry.
Using KBD's grayscreen prototype, the team worked together to completely reorganize the structure of the site, creating three "mini-sites" that all lived under the ipwireless.com umbrella. As the IPW & KBD teams continued to collaborate on content, KBD also added a fresh new look to the site, adding much-needed whitespace, brighter colors, and custom illustrations to better define the technology. The entire site is built on the Drupal content management system, allowing IPW to easily make updates to the site on their own as needed. The result? An easy-to-navigate, easy-to-update clean website that completely solidifies the IPWireless story to potential customers and investors.
Wordpress is quickly becoming the web's top open source CMS, and KBD is contributing to its success by using it frequently as our platform for client websites. This summer, we were lucky enough to work with Crowd Favorite, Word Press developers & magicians, who made our designs for a16z.com and bhorowitz.com come to life. We were pleased to see that both of these sites have been featured on wordpress.org's showcase of the best Wordpress implementations out there.
